Previous SEL Number: 03SF-01-FOMB

Description: Class B fire fighting foam certified as compliant with NFPA 11. Examples include Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), Alcohol-Resistant (AR)-AFFF, and protein or fluoroprotein-based types as well as other synthetics for use in low, medium or high expansion for both portable and fixed applications.

ImportantFeatures: Class B fire-fighting foam is a stable mass of gas-filled bubbles of lower density than most flammable and combustible liquids. Because it is lighter than the flammable/combustible liquid, it floats on top, producing an air-excluding, cooling, vapor-sealing, water-bearing material that facilitates extinguishment and helps to prevent evolution and therefore ignition of flammable or combustible vapors.

Operating Considerations: When contemplating the use of Class B firefighting foams, consideration must be given to:
1) the type of flammable or combustible liquid to be extinguished (e.g. hydrocarbon or water soluble polar solvents)
2) required induction rate with water necessary to develop the appropriate solution
3) the type of application system to be used, and
4) the appropriate quantity and application rate of finished foam solution for the given size and type of fire.

Training Requirements: Firefighter I and Firefighter II training IAW NFPA 1010.
Initial Training: Minimal (<1 day)
Sustainment Training: Minimal (<1 day)
