Previous SEL Number: 02PE-02-COOL

Description: Cooling garment, vest, or device (no performance standard currently applies for this item).

ImportantFeatures: Cooling garments may be active or passive, and involve a range of different technologies. Typical designs include vests and garments, though other types of devices such as vortex tubes and umbilical air lines can be used. May be reusable or disposable. Passive devices (such as "ice" vests) provide cooling without the ability for user adjustment. Active devices usually involve some form of circulating fluid or air, which may require a power source and peripheral equipment for operation. Devices differ in their cooling capacity, weight, bulk, complexity, operating conditions, and effectiveness.

Operating Considerations: The efficiency and effectiveness of personal cooling devices are greatly influenced by the type of protective clothing being worn by the user. The effectiveness of a cooling garment worn under a non-permeable, vapor-tight protective ensemble is greatly reduced. The work rate of the user can also reduce effectiveness. Testing has shown that the efficacy of cooling garments is dramatically reduced at high metabolic work rates.

Tradeoffs exist between the additional weight and burden of cooling device versus its cooling performance. Some devices may add complexity to donning efficiency. The effectiveness of the device will vary with the type of technology used for cooling. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of device. The selected device should work without interfering with the wearing of the selected ensemble, and without creating integrity or protection deficiencies.
