Title: Suit, "Search", Improvised Explosive Device/Explosive Ordnance Disposal (IED/EOD) Protective Ensemble

Last Updated: 9/23/2018 8:33:36 PM

Previous SEL Number: 02PE-01-SRCH

Description: Protective ensemble designed to provide protection from detonation (including fragmentation, blast overpressure, impact, and thermal effects) that is also compatible with or integral with one or more protective ensembles certified to the Class 3 or Class 4 requirements of NFPA 1994. The suit may or may not be designated by the manufacturer as a full coverage bomb suit. This ensemble includes appropriate respiratory protection. Note that any bomb suit components integral to an NFPA 1994 ensemble are required to have been tested and third-party certified to the NFPA 1994 requirements as part of the ensemble.

ImportantFeatures: This type of protective ensemble is a whole body protective outfit that can be rapidly donned and doffed. The protective ensemble must allow the wearer adequate situational awareness, mobility and comfort when conducting reconnaissance procedures involving an explosive threat device.

Operating Considerations: Search Suits are not to be worn in place of Bomb Suits for render safe procedures (see 02PE-01-BSUT).

This type of protective ensemble is not specifically designed to provide protection to the wearer from chemical, biological or radiological threats. However, this ensemble can be worn with protective ensembles designed for these types of threat hazards. Bomb disposal technicians wearing these types of protective ensembles can be subjected to the physiological effects of heat stress. Additional ensembles may be needed for chemical/biological protection (see NFPA 1994, Class 2 or 3 ensembles).

May only be purchased by an FBI-Accredited Bomb Squad. For information on establishing new bomb squad programs, agencies should contact the Special Agent Bomb Technician in the nearest FBI Office or call directly to the FBI Program Manager at the Hazardous Devices School, (256) 313-1910.
