Title: Modifications/Accessories, Watercraft

Last Updated: 11/12/2018 9:28:15 PM

Previous SEL Number: 17WC-00-WCMA

Description: Watercraft modifications and accessories to support specific missions, such as propeller guards, side scan sonar, GPS upgrades, air tank racks, and stokes litter equipment.

ImportantFeatures: Propeller guards/cages protect the propeller from damage and protect victims and rescuers from direct contact with a moving propeller in the water during a rescue. They encircle the propeller and are constructed of plastic or metal. The plastic guards will shatter and break when striking a solid stationary object, thus transferring the impact force to the plastic guard and not the lower motor unit. The metal guard will not break and transfers the impact force to the lower motor unit.

Air tank racks should be considered for watercraft that may be used for dive operations to ensure safe, secure storage of air tanks.

Operating Considerations: Careful consideration should be given to the mission requirements of the watercraft, and the inherent tradeoffs. For example, adding rescue or diving equipment to a patrol craft adds weight and can diminish the speed, range, and maneuverability required for the primary mission.

One approach is to ensure that major accessories are modular and removable. This allows a watercraft to be configured as required for multiple missions.
