Previous SEL Number: 04HW-03-SSRV

Description: Device that provides a network (TCP/IP) presence for serial, parallel, modbus, and other devices. Example: printer network adapter.

ImportantFeatures: Should offer Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) capability as well as the ability to operate at a static IP address.

Operating Considerations: May require a proprietary adapter/converter, or client-host components to reconvert signal to serial at the other end.

Use of these devices has declined as more new equipment includes built-in networking capability. However, they are still used extensively for radio equipment, printers, GPS base stations, weather stations, etc.

If these devices will be used to connect sensitive equipment to the network (medical devices, mission-critical communications gear, etc.), care must be taken to secure the device's management interfaces, virtual TTYs, and firmware upgrade ports.
