SEL Number: 04AP-02-AVLS
Title: Systems, Automatic Vehicle Locating (AVL)

Last Updated: 3/4/2024 2:43:51 PM

Previous SEL Number: 04AP-02-AVLS

Description: Systems that utilize vehicle-based devices to provide real-time location to a central monitoring facility.

While some sensors and other hardware may be required, this functionality may also be obtainable via subscription as a cloud-based service using a web browser interface, as opposed to purchasing software. However, special security considerations apply for data stored remotely. See 04AP-11-SAAS for further information.

ImportantFeatures: Both GPS (with differential correction) and DR (dead reckoning) capability. Inclusion of DR preferred, and newer hybrid systems include both GPS and DR.
Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)-capable GPS preferred, and GLONASS compatibility is desirable.

Operating Considerations: Consider whether devices are or are not integrated with cellular locating technologies (tower triangulation, etc.).
May be susceptible to interference from broadband services using adjacent frequencies - GPS antenna may require a notch filter.
Procure as package to ensure compatibility.
There are several Coordinate Systems and Datum/Projections - it is critical that all involved systems (GIS, mapping, GPS receivers, etc.) are utilizing the same system and projection.
Coordinate Systems may include: Lat/Long, State Plane, UTM, etc.
Datum/Projections may include: NAD 27, NAD 83, WGS 84, etc.
