Title: System, Unmanned Maritime Vehicle (UMVS)

Last Updated: 10/8/2018 8:51:12 PM

Previous SEL Number: 03OE-07-UMVS

Description: Remotely operated submersible vehicle systems to support various mission areas such as explosive device detection/remediation, hazardous materials operations, tactical law enforcement operations, search & rescue, and surveillance/detection. See Item 03OE-07-UPGD for accessories and upgrades.
(This item replaces 03OE-07-ROVS.)

ImportantFeatures: Generally consists of vehicle and control station. Some form of waypoint navigation and autopilot capabilities may be available, particularly on units capable of patrol operation. Control stations can have a wide variety of capabilities from manual operation to pre-programmed mission capabilities. Should have attachment points for camera, sensors, and other devices.
Desirable features for explosive detection/remediation include a multi-degree arm and gripper rated for 7-pound lift, self-correcting positional awareness in currents up to 3 knots, low light cameras, the ability to initiate an underwater firing system, and the capability to self-affix to a variety of underwater objects.

Operating Considerations: For any remotely accessible vehicle, ensure that manufacturer's default access credentials (username, password) are changed prior to operational use.
Consider operating time limitations and range for controllability.
Carefully consider mission environment, particularly currents. Strong currents can defeat stationkeeping and self-correcting navigation systems.
Consider threat and operational scenario. For example, several platforms exist that incorporate specific capabilities, but no current systems incorporate all mission capabilities necessary for operations against explosive devices or IEDs.
Consider portability. Ideally, the device should be two-person portable.

Training Requirements: Core Training: Manufacturer's specifications.
Initial Training: Extensive (>2 days)
Sustainment Training: Moderate (1-2 days)
