SEL Number: 01SW-03-SUIT
Title: Suit, Ice, Surface Water Operations Protective, NFPA 1952

Last Updated: 7/8/2022 12:54:53 PM

Previous SEL Number: 01SW-03-SUIT

Description: A suit that provides thermal and flotation protection for extreme cold water (certified as compliant with NFPA 1952).
(Replaces Item 01WA-04-SUTI).

ImportantFeatures: The ice suit is worn with an ensemble that includes footwear, gloves, helmet, and optional swimming fins. The ensemble is designed to provide thermal and flotation protection for extreme cold water, and should have abrasion resistant surfaces (especially knees and elbows), as well as reflective surfaces.

Ensemble contains necessary flotation for the rescuer so a PFD is not needed. The ensemble should also contain an integrated chest harness to secure the rescuer to a rope tether. These ensembles are not the preferred ensemble for ice rescue operations in moving water.

Operating Considerations: Ice suits should be utilized in static or non-moving water rescue operations only.

Surface water operations are defined as "Technical rescue activities requiring water functional capabilities involving surface water, swift water, tidal water, surf, and ice that do not require underwater respiratory equipment."

Training Requirements: Core Training: NFPA 2500, NFPA 1006.
Initial Training: Extensive (>2 days)
