SEL Number: 01AR-01-SAR
Title: Respirator, Supplied Air

Last Updated: 7/8/2022 12:16:03 PM

Previous SEL Number: 01AR-01-SAR

Description: A positive-pressure respiratory protective device that delivers air to the wearer via an "air-line" connected to a remote breathable air source. SAR must be certified by NIOSH, and can be worn with multiple ensemble configurations.

ImportantFeatures: Consists of either a loose-fitting or tight-fitting facepiece, connected via air-line to breathable air source.

When used in IDLH environments, a tight-fitting facepiece is required, and the airline SAR must incorporate a 5 or 10 minute duration escape SCBA . For CBRN operations, a 15 minute or longer escape SCBA is recommended.

Operating Considerations: Requires a source of breathing air such as a compressor (see 19GN-00-COMP) or other breathing air system.
Breathing air quality must be tested and certified as Grade D or better in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Most SAR air-lines are limited to a maximum length of 300 feet.
Mission planning should consider mobility limitations imposed by air-line.
Tight-fitting facepiece SARs must be fit-tested in a negative pressure mode in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134. SARs with loose-fitting facepieces or air-fed suits do not require fit-testing.

Training Requirements: Core Training: NFPA 470, Chapter 6, 8, 10 as applicable, OSHA 1910.120, OSHA 1910.134, NFPA 1404.
Initial Training: Extensive (>2 days)
Sustainment Training: Moderate (1-2 days)
